Supported formats

Supported formats may change before public release. Treat this page as the current preview reference, not a permanent guarantee.

Current safest inputs

The current upload-backed workflow is safest with:

FormatExtensionStatus
Markdown.mdSupported in current preview
Plain text.txtSupported in current preview

Use these formats for early testing and documentation workflows.

Not currently safe to assume

Do not assume the current upload flow supports:

  • PDF;
  • DOC;
  • DOCX;
  • RTF;
  • images or scanned pages;
  • archives such as ZIP files;
  • hidden/system files;
  • unknown binary formats.

Some of these formats may be useful future additions, but unsupported formats should be treated as unavailable until the product explicitly accepts them.

Use one file per chapter or section:

chapter-01.md
chapter-02.md
chapter-03.txt

Keep each file readable without relying on complex layout. Arc works best when source text is clean and evidence can point back to stable files.

Exporting from other tools

If you write in Word, Scrivener, Google Docs, Obsidian, or another editor, export a small test batch to Markdown or plain text first.

Before importing, check:

  • chapter boundaries;
  • heading text;
  • character encoding;
  • whether footnotes or comments were included accidentally;
  • whether private planning notes were mixed into manuscript files.
